Ask anyone who has heard of Penang and they would most likely tell you that its name has always been synonymous with food. Some might even recall memories of them making a trip to this northern state just to eat. Nevertheless, in recent years, various new attractions have sprouted up around both the island and the mainland, offering a more varied experience for visitors.

Being a popular travel destination, Penang offers something for everyone. Dwell in the middle of the historic city of George Town or book a room at a posh hotel in Batu Ferringhi; explore a heritage trail or go on your own street art hunt; free your worries at the seaside or shop to your heart’s content at our premier lifestyle malls. What’s more, you can now satisfy your scientific curiosities at the newly opened Tech Dome, take a stroll through a nature reserve at The Habitat on Penang Hill, and have a peek at the insect world up close at Entopia. And that’s just to name a few.

About Penang Trishaws

One of the most common sights when visiting George Town is the pedal-powered trishaw, also known as the beca. Before the arrival of cars and buses in the 1950s, there were thousands of trishaws that made up a large part of Penang's transportation system. However, the numbers have dwindled to around 200 and are now confined to the inner city and Batu Ferringhi.

As part of the city's living heritage, hitching a ride on a trishaw is a unique experience unlike any other. The trishaw man usually doubles as a tour guide, pointing out and sharing information on the various sights along the journey. It is also a great opportunity to snap photos or collect video footages of your travel as this open-fronted vehicle usually goes at a leisurely pace.

With the rise in living standards, trishaw men are soon becoming rare. Most of them have past their prime and the younger generations have no intention in taking over. Should you wish to enjoy a ride on one of these three-wheelers, head over to the Penang Trishaw Entourage exhibition when it's at your town or, better yet, take a memorable trip to Penang soon.
